Floor sound insulation – an important factor in modern villas and high-rise buildings

In modern villa architecture, privacy, quietness and comfort are increasingly top priorities. Beyond being a living space, a villa is a place to relax and unwind, where every family member can enjoy a sense of comfort and tranquility in every moment.

One of the factors that directly affects this living experience is the sound insulation between floors. However beautifully designed and solidly built, if noise from the upper floor still travels to the lower floor (footsteps, daily activities, TV sound…), the quality of the building cannot be considered perfect.

For this reason, field measurement of the sound insulation of the floor structure is a necessary verification step to assess the real effectiveness of the current acoustic solution. From there, it can be determined whether the sound insulation materials and sound absorption materials in use are appropriate, and whether the installation meets the standard.

ISO 16283-1: the gold standard for airborne sound insulation measurement

ISO 16283-1:2014 is the international standard specifying the field measurement method for airborne sound insulation of building elements such as:

  • Walls and partitions
  • Ceilings and floors
  • Door and window systems

The ISO 16283-1 standard for airborne sound insulation measurement ensures that measurements are carried out under real conditions in the completed building, giving the most realistic and objective results. ISO 16283-1 is especially suitable for:

  • Verifying the sound insulation performance of floor structures between villa floors
  • Evaluating compliance with the acoustic design
  • Serving as a basis for acceptance and handover of the building
  • Resolving disputes or complaints related to noise

DASM measures villa floor sound insulation in Hanoi

DASM carried out floor sound insulation measurement – field sound insulation measurement – for a high-end villa in Hanoi, evaluating the sound insulation between the upper and lower floors according to ISO 16283-1. This is a verification step performed after the building is completed, ensuring that the measurement results accurately reflect the actual construction quality.

The floor sound insulation measurement procedure includes:

  • Reference sound source: An omnidirectional loudspeaker emits pink noise in the upper-floor room.
  • Sound pressure level measurement: Specialized microphones measure levels in the source room and the receiving room (lower floor).
  • Acoustic signal analysis: The data is processed with specialized software to calculate the R’w index (Weighted Apparent Sound Reduction Index).

The higher the R’w result, the better the sound insulation of the floor structure, ensuring privacy between floors.

Featured field acoustic services of DASM

In addition to acoustic testing – floor sound insulation measurement, DASM provides a portfolio of specialized acoustic services performed according to international standards, meeting the diverse needs of investors, contractors and design firms:

Sound insulation measurement according to ISO standards:

  • ISO 16283-1: Airborne sound insulation measurement (walls, floors, ceilings, doors)
  • ISO 16283-2: Impact sound insulation measurement (floors, staircases…)
  • ISO 717-1, 717-2: Rating and classification of sound insulation

Equipment noise measurement:

  • ISO 3745: Noise measurement in anechoic and hemi-anechoic rooms
  • ISO 7779: Noise measurement of IT equipment, printers, routers, adapters, fans…

Reverberation time and sound absorption measurement:

  • Analysis of sound reflections and RT60 reverberation time measurement
  • Evaluation of sound absorption performance in meeting rooms, auditoriums and listening rooms

Overall acoustic consulting and verification:

All services are performed by a team of acoustic experts with many years of experience, using standard-compliant equipment that is calibrated periodically.
