Sound Transmission Loss Testing of Viaerogel Glass Beads and Viaerogel Concrete

Testing to determine the sound transmission loss (Sound Transmission Loss; Standards: ASTM 1050 & ASTM 2611) of Viaerogel glass beads & Viaerogel concrete was carried out by the Institute for Development & Application of Acoustic Materials (DASM) in late August 2022 at the request of the customer – the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Hanoi Architectural University.

Overview of the customer and product

Founded in 1972, the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Hanoi Architectural University is one of the largest faculties in Vietnam for training high-quality civil engineers. The Faculty currently trains the following levels: Civil Engineer, Urban Underground Works Engineer, Building Materials Technology Engineer, and Construction Project Management Engineer. The Postgraduate Faculty trains: Master of Engineering in civil and industrial construction; Doctor of Engineering in construction.

With more than 50 years of history in civil engineering education, and a highly qualified team of staff and lecturers, many of whom earned master's and doctoral degrees in developed countries such as Japan, the USA, France, Belgium, Germany, Russia and China, the Faculty currently undertakes the following tasks:

Undergraduate training: 4 majors

• Civil & Industrial Construction
• Urban Underground Construction
• Building Materials Engineering Technology
• Construction Project Management

Postgraduate and doctoral training:

• Major in Civil & Industrial Construction

In scientific research in particular, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has published 90 ISI/Scopus-indexed papers in the last three years (2020-2022). Many ministerial-level research projects have been carried out effectively by the Faculty's lecturers. In addition, the Faculty actively cooperates, exchanges and learns from universities, institutes and research centers in the field of construction in Vietnam and abroad.

In late August 2022, the Institute for Development & Application of Acoustic Materials carried out testing to determine the Sound Transmission Loss (Standards: ASTM 1050 & ASTM 2611) of the Viaerogel glass beads & Viaerogel concrete developed by the Faculty of Civil Engineering, using an impedance tube. The Viaerogel glass beads are grey-yellow, with thicknesses of 20/30/40mm and a diameter of 42.0mm. The Viaerogel concrete is opaque white, with thicknesses of 33.3mm (sample M2) and 23.9mm (sample M25) and a diameter of 44.0mm.
